Jacob Hicks
Jacob Hicks (b. 1985, Midland, TX) completed his BFA in 2010 at Southern Methodist University and his MFA in 2012 at the New York Academy of Art. He has received the W. Paul Beckwith Emerging Artist Grant, the Eric Fischl '66 Artist-in-Residence Teaching Grant, and the Mary Vernon Painting Prize, and has participated in multiple international artist residency programs.
Hicks' current works derive from his series of female icons called 100 Women, started in 2016. These paintings serve as a form of resistance to misogyny and racism. He takes the Northern and Italian Renaissance, Spanish Baroque, and English styles and recontextualizes them with modern and diverse subjects. He explains, "My work has always addressed these things: history, humanism, beauty, archetype, mythology, and the subconscious-the individual's personal link to our collective mythos. Right now, I am focusing on the female as a way to embody these interests."
The artist is currently based in Brooklyn, NY.
