SELECTED WORKS

March 19 – April 11, 2026

Gallery Henoch is pleased to announce Selected Works, Alan Feltus’s first solo exhibition with the gallery. The show will run from March 19th through April 11th, 2026. The exhibition will open March 19th, 2026.

During his formative years in New York, Feltus developed an early affinity for painters such as Henri Rousseau and Balthus, later finding a lifelong touchstone in Felice Casorati’s "Susanna." That encounter solidified his commitment to a narrative figure-painting style built on compositional restraint and a measured tension between figures. His palette is distinctly his own, moving through warm terracotta, pink limestone, pale blues, and chalky whites, informed by years of working in Italy. His post-secondary education includes a bachelor’s degree at the Cooper Union followed by an MFA at Yale University.

Often inspired by early Renaissance art and classical Greek sculpture, Feltus arranges figures and spaces with the balance and discipline of traditional art. He seeks to portray the complexities of human relationships through the use of negative space, creating mystery between figures and allowing subtle gestures and proximity to suggest intimacy or uncertainty. Feltus’s figures are expressive yet remote, at once dynamic and still. In his effort to convey what cannot be spoken, he relies on gesture, self-contained poses that are suspended in time. About his work, he says, “I am interested in the psychological play that can be variously interpreted between my figures.” In addition, the artist often turns to himself as a model, creating a large number of self-portraits and semi-autobiographical paintings.

Feltus’s work has been shown in many solo and group shows including exhibits at the Lux Art Institute in Encinitas, CA, the Morris Museum in Morristown, NJ, and the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art. His work is found in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts, the Huntington Museum of Art, the National Academy of Design, the Oklahoma City Art Museum, and the American Academy in Rome, among others. He was awarded the Rome Prize Fellowship in 1970. He currently lives and works in Assisi, Italy.
