Biography

Samuel Hung (b. 1981, Taiwan) is a New York-based artist currently living in Brooklyn. He earned his BFA from the Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, CA, and furthered his painting studies at the Grand Central Atelier in Queens, where he became acquainted with the techniques of the 19th-century French Academy. Since then, Hung has honed his skills in still life painting, choosing objects and compositions that elicit playfulness, whimsy, and nostalgia.

About his still life subjects, Hung says: “I am drawn to the beauty of the old and familiar. From Japanese icons to nostalgic Americana, I collect items that are ephemeral and elicit feelings of wistful memory. These forgotten objects evoke an anthropomorphic sense of yearning from the past and elicit feelings of satisfaction one experiences when those moments are relived.”

Hung’s paintings can be found in collections in the United States, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Japan. He is a principal instructor at the Grand Central Atelier’s core program, where he teaches cast drawing, cast painting, and still life painting.
